MOYALE; KENYA: Two more people were killed in Funan-Nyata area in Moyale on Sunday in the raging clashes between two communities.

The death toll in the last three days has climbed to five.

Moyale police boss Nehemiah Langat said two people were killed during the morning clash.

He assured the public that more security personnel had been deployed in areas to end the clashes.

However, businesses remained closed in Moyale town and public transport vehicles did not operate for the better part of yesterday morning.

Traders opened their businesses when an uneasy calm returned in the afternoon.

The clashes have been occurring mostly along the Moyale-Nairobi highway, where the two communities are fighting for control of pasture and water.

The fights are generally concentrated in the Funan-Nyata area, which is about 35 kilometres from Moyale town, along the Moyale-Nairobi highway.

On Saturday, Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani told TV station KTN that tension was high in the region, adding that even senior police officers were afraid to leave their houses.

But yesterday, and immediately after the fresh killings, a combined security team comprising regular, administration police, and the General Service Unit were deployed in Moyale town and Funan-Nyata area.

Meanwhile, Borana and Burji youth clashed within Moyale town centre at Manyattta near Moyale stadium at about noon before riot police intervened. The Burjis accused Borana youth of vandalising and looting a lorry along the highway last Friday.
